Red Flag Warnings

Red Flag Warnings (RFW) are put out by the National Weather Service (NWS) when certain weather conditions are met – usually a combination of wind & dryness.

The conditions that trigger a NWS vary by region and forecast office.

Without going into all the details, RFWs are not consistently applied nor scientifically developed to help utilities judge wildfire risk.

They are excellent indicators of general wildfire risk, but utilities can use additional help to decide if wildfire weather is imminent.

Duration of RFW from 1999-2024. Ranging from 0 to 119 days.

Note the stark contrasts exactly at state borders or NWS forecasting offices. (e.g. Alabama versus Mississippi. Pennsylvania. NH vs VT.)
